Union Talk – 1968 Sanitation Strike
As a way for us to learn about our labor history, please join us for a discussion on the 1968 AFSCME Memphis Sanitation Strike on April 14 at 5:30pm on Zoom. The strike happened at the peak of the Civil Rights Movement which saw workers demanding equality both in society and at their workplaces. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4th during his visit to Memphis to show his support for the sanitation workers.
If you have time, please read a short article and timeline or watch the films At the River I Stand and AFSCME Memphis Video which recount the events leading up to the strike.
Steward Jose Perez will be leading the discussion in the unions first ever Union Talk.
